Call for the selection of 6 UNITO students for the programme “New African Diasporas: Transnational communities, cultures and economies” - February 18th – March 18th, 2017
The Centre for African Studies organizes a training module for the international mobility programme “New African Diasporas: Transnational communities, cultures and economies”, by the SIT Graduate Institute (Vermont, USA): a study course of 16 weeks dedicated to American university students, spread between the United States, China, Senegal and Italy. Italy is the chosen destination for these CSA organized events. The CSA aims at gathering 6 students from different universities around Turin, in cooperation with the University of Studies of Turin and “UNITO for Refugees Students and Scholars”. After the selection, students will take part in a 3 weeks training course, which will take place in Turin and in some areas in Lombardia, including a field visit to the Murid community in Pontevico (BS). Participants will be expected to attend all of the dedicated activities, starting with three study courses on entrepreneurship and migration, African Muslims, Framework and Fieldwork. The classes will be accompanied by field visits and guest lecturers. Another initiative (optional) will be the viewing of films and documentaries on migrations. The activity aims at sensitizing students towards these topics and at supporting a multicultural dialogue.

4,5 hours in “Entrepreneurship” and Migration”, divided in three classes that are one and a half hour long

4,5 hours in “Africana Muslim”, divided in three classes that are one and a half hour long

4,5 hours in “Fieldwork and Framework”, divided in three classes that are one and a half hour long

10,5 hours with guest lecturers such as institutional representatives, experts and researchers, Foundation4Africa, NGOs, Chamber of Commerce, International Training Centre (ILO). Overall, there will be 7 meetings long 1,5 hours each.

6 hours dedicated to films or documentaries on the economic integration of diasporas, each one accompanied by a dissertation written by the respective author (3 meetings of 2 hours each).

2 hours of visit to the International Training Centre (ILO), inside the United Nations campus in Turin.

7 hours of fieldwork during the “Neighbourhood day”, organised visits to areas of interest aiding with the integration in Turin.

3 hours of a food culture workshop, also open to Italian students

5 hours of field visit to Islamic cultural areas of Turin.

3 hours of field visit between Brescia and Bergamo.

2 days of field visit at the Murid community in Pontevico (BS).
The programme requires a minimum attendance of 80% of the activities. All costs (room and board, when necessary, transport) will be entirely covered by the programme.
Participation is reserved for students with an adequate proficiency of the English language; competences and experiences acquired during the studies will constitute a preferential element.
In order to certificate the “crediti formativi” a final report will be required of 5 files on the programme activities to be delivered by March 30th, 2017.
